Everyone’s Gone Quackers for Our New Arrivals!

This April, The Fleet has been filled with the sound of tiny webbed feet and the laughter of residents and visitors alike as we welcomed some very special guests to the home. As part of our month-long Easter celebrations, we were delighted to introduce five duck eggs into our care, which was a unique and joyful experience that has quickly become one of the year's highlights.

They arrived on 7th April, and residents and staff carefully looked after the eggs as we waited for the big moment. In just a matter of days, four of the five eggs hatched and our home was blessed with four lively ducklings who wasted no time in making themselves at home. Our residents decided to name them BIG Duck, Lewey, Spiderman Duck, and Sir Quack-A-Lot, and each one has waddled their way into the hearts of everyone here at The Fleet.

The ducklings’ presence brought life and energy to every corner of the home. From visiting residents in their rooms to splashing about in a paddling pool in the garden during Pet Appreciation Day, their adventures have been a source of delight. For those living with dementia or limited mobility, the tactile and sensory experience of holding the ducklings offered moments of calm, comfort and connection.

This nurturing environment provided far more than just cuteness. Duckling therapy is part of our wider commitment to animal-assisted activities as it offers significant emotional and physical benefits, including reduced stress and anxiety, lower blood pressure, and an overall boost in mood. For many, the arrival of the ducklings provided a reason to head outside and enjoy our beautiful garden spaces in the spring sunshine, which encouraged gentle movement and a renewed sense of purpose.

As the days passed, our ducklings thrived under the love and care they received, growing stronger and more confident with every visit and cuddle. Now, as they prepare to settle into their forever home at a nearby country farm, we say farewell to our feathered friends with full hearts and fond memories.

We can't wait for the rest of our Easter celebrations! At The Fleet, we are committed to providing our residents with a rich and meaningful lifestyle around the clock, full of the things they love the most.
