A Magical Visit from Wizard the European Eagle Owl

Residents at The Fleet were treated to a truly special experience this March when Wizard, a stunning European Eagle Owl, came to visit our home. With his striking orange eyes, impressive wingspan, and gentle nature, Wizard quickly became the star of the day, captivating residents and staff alike. His visit was part of an ongoing partnership with the rare breeds farm in Dartmouth, which brings a variety of animals to meet our residents, providing stimulating and enjoyable experiences.

The morning was filled with excitement as Wizard made his way around the home, perching on one of the visitor's hands while residents had the opportunity to get up close and stroke his soft feathers. Many were in awe of his calm demeanour, with some reminiscing about their own experiences with birds and wildlife over the years.

Animal visits play a key role in enhancing the well-being of our residents. Pet therapy has been widely recognised for its ability to reduce anxiety, encourage social interaction, and bring a sense of calm and joy. The presence of animals can be especially beneficial for individuals living with dementia, as it can evoke memories and create special moments of connection. For some, Wizard’s visit was a comforting and sensory experience, while for others, it sparked lively conversations and storytelling.

The joy and engagement among residents were clear to see. One of our ladies is a lifelong bird lover and was particularly thrilled to meet Wizard and spend time admiring his feather patterns. Another resident shared memories of watching owls in the countryside as a child and how they always wondered where the owl's favourite place to visit was. These interactions are invaluable in creating meaningful experiences and promoting emotional well-being.

Beyond the residents, Wizard’s visit also brought smiles to the faces of our staff, who enjoyed seeing the positive impact such a visit had on those in our care. Moments like these strengthen our community, fostering connections and shared experiences that make The Fleet a warm and welcoming home.

We are always committed to finding new and engaging ways to enrich the lives of our residents. Visits from animals, musicians, entertainers, and local community groups are just some of the ways we create a vibrant and stimulating environment at The Fleet Care Home.
